This book is my favorite out of all of the books that I have written.
The story of a little girl who tries to fit the mold of everything else around her and realizes in the end that she is just perfect the way she is. This is the book that I desperately needed growing up and it feels amazing to share this message with so many others.
There are so many standards in society that you strive to bend yourself into any shape just to fit in and you only end up damaging yourself in the process. Some people never find who they truly are and spend their entire lives putting on a thousand faces for the people around them; trapped in an endless cycle of blending in, never being able to be confident in who they are.
This book actually took shape in spite of a bad case of writer's block.
I asked my siblings what I should write about and the responses were:
"Write about a Dragon!"
"And make him be friends with a Bunny!"
"Yeah! But make him die at the end!
Yup! No exaggeration. Thats exactly how that went...which got the wheels turning in my head. What would be the plot behind that odd friendship? Why would the dragon die? and what about the bunny? How would they go on about their lives afterwards.
It made me think of how I have experienced death and moved on from it. You grieve, but you learn to move forward. You can choose to carry the memories, or you can choose to lock them away.
In the book, Malia chooses to carry those memories (the egg). keeping Denver in her thoughts as she continued to push forward on making their dreams happen.
The theme behind this story, is Friendship is Forever.
This book is the perfect story to explain death to a child. and if you believe in reincarnation. Even better!
